Workshop 01 - Appreciating Context

What is meant by context? Context is the character and setting of the area within which a projected scheme will sit. It is its natural as well as human history;the forms of the settlements,buildings and spaces;its ecology and archaeology;its location,and the routes that pass through it.Context also includes people,the individuals living in or near an area and how communities are organised so that citizens become real participants in the projected development. A thorough appreciation of the overall site context is the starting point for designing a distinct place. (Urban Design Compendium. English Partnerships and The Housing Corporation)

In workshop 01 (W01) the students are expected to establish their basic knowledge and understanding about their selected site -in lippo karawaci- and it surrounding area as a context for the project01. The students will make an observation about the site and its context through mapping and diagramming to illustrate the following aspects:

Role and relationships of Site area to its strategic context (Lippo Karawaci)
  • Position in Karawaci region
  • Land use of area
  • Linkages to wider area
  • Local Character
  • Natural Features

  • Movement framework (walking, cycling, public transport)
  • Urban space and massing
  • Facilities/Type of Buildings
  • Building Parcel and plot of the area
  • Open space and Landscape (type of open space: greenway, waterway, meadow, playing fields, churchyard/cemetery, allotments, park, plaza, communal gardern, private garden, playground, courtyard, atrium)
  • Green Networks
  • Landmarks, vistas and focal points
  • Skylines
